A study published in the European Journal of Orthodontics explores the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in orthodontic triage and screening. Conducted by a team from Sydney, Australia, the study compares a novel tele-orthodontics and AI triaging method
against traditional face-to-face consultations using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). The AI method demonstrated a sensitivity of 1 and a specificity of 0.67 at the IOTN threshold of 3, and a sensitivity of 0.93 and specificity of 0.73 at the threshold of 4. These results suggest that AI can effectively categorize patients based on malocclusion severity, offering a reliable tool for screening in public health systems.
