A comprehensive study conducted by 22 public service media organizations, including DW, has revealed that AI chatbots frequently misrepresent news content. The study evaluated four widely used AI assistants—ChatGPT,
Microsoft's Copilot, Google's Gemini, and Perplexity AI—and found that these tools distort news content 45% of the time, regardless of language or territory. The research highlighted significant issues with accuracy, sourcing, and the ability to distinguish fact from opinion. Notably, 53% of the responses to DW's questions contained significant issues, with 29% having specific accuracy problems. The study also noted factual errors, such as incorrect identification of political figures. This research follows a similar study by the BBC, which also found substantial inaccuracies in AI-generated news content.
