What's Happening?
SOD Sciences, Inc. has announced a strategic partnership with Vivos Therapeutics, Inc., a company specializing in treatments for obstructive sleep apnea. Vivos Therapeutics has acquired an 11% equity interest in SOD Sciences and a 50% ownership interest in SOD's
pseudohypoxia patent and the ReBalU Primed Cell Test. This partnership aims to address pseudohypoxia, a cellular state where cells behave as if oxygen-starved despite oxygen presence, leading to a metabolic shift associated with chronic diseases and cancer. Joseph M. Salvani, CEO of SOD Sciences, highlighted that the repeated cycles of oxygen desaturation and reoxygenation, common in conditions like obstructive sleep apnea, are a significant driver of pseudohypoxia. The ReBalU Primed Cell Test, now co-owned, is designed to identify individuals in this pseudohypoxic state early, allowing for intervention before chronic diseases fully manifest. The ReBalU Protocol, SOD Sciences' lead product, is a medical food designed to rebuild the body's antioxidant reserve, which is depleted by pseudohypoxia.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is significant for the U.S. healthcare landscape, particularly in the context of chronic disease management and prevention. Pseudohypoxia is linked to major chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and accelerated aging, which collectively account for 90% of the nation's $5.3 trillion in annual healthcare spending. The ability to identify pseudohypoxia early through the ReBalU Primed Cell Test could enable proactive interventions, potentially reducing the incidence and severity of these costly conditions. With an estimated 80 million American adults experiencing nightly desaturation and reoxygenation cycles that drive pseudohypoxia, and 80% of obstructive sleep apnea cases undiagnosed, the market for early detection and treatment is substantial. The collaboration between SOD Sciences and Vivos Therapeutics, which offers FDA-cleared oral appliances to address sleep apnea, creates a comprehensive approach to both diagnose and treat the underlying mechanisms contributing to chronic disease, potentially leading to improved patient outcomes and significant cost savings for the healthcare system.
What's Next?
The partnership will focus on marketing the ReBalU Primed Cell Test nationwide to over 2,600 sleep centers and chronic disease practices in the United States. SOD Sciences is also set to begin an Institutional Review Board study of the ReBalU Test/Treat/Retest Protocol at Cleveland Clinic Weston. This study aims to demonstrate the protocol's effectiveness in improving the reduced glutathione reserve through increased endogenous butyrate and DHA. The combined efforts of Vivos's oral appliances, which stop desaturation cycles, and the ReBalU Protocol, which rebuilds antioxidant reserves, will be monitored through quarterly retests to confirm efficacy. This integrated approach seeks to reach nearly 500,000 patients with chronic diseases through existing channels with Cleveland Clinic Weston, American Health Associates, and Vivos's customer base. The success of these initiatives could lead to broader adoption of pseudohypoxia testing and the ReBalU Protocol as a standard in personalized medicine and chronic disease prevention.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaboration between SOD Sciences and Vivos Therapeutics highlights a growing trend in healthcare towards personalized medicine and preventative care, moving beyond symptom management to address the root causes of disease. The concept of pseudohypoxia, where cellular metabolism shifts towards a disease-prone state even with adequate oxygen, challenges traditional understandings of disease progression. This partnership underscores the ethical and societal implications of early detection, offering individuals the chance to intervene before significant health deterioration. It also brings to light the economic burden of chronic diseases and the potential for innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to alleviate this strain. The focus on rebuilding the body's antioxidant reserve through the ReBalU Protocol suggests a shift towards leveraging the body's intrinsic healing mechanisms, potentially reducing reliance on more invasive or pharmaceutical interventions. The integration of sleep health, particularly obstructive sleep apnea, as a critical early warning sign for chronic disease, could also elevate its importance in routine medical screenings and public health campaigns.
