What's Happening?
Mochi Medical, initially established as an obesity management practice, is broadening its virtual care services by integrating health coaches into its multidisciplinary team. These coaches will work alongside physicians, nurse practitioners, and registered
dietitians to provide high-touch behavior change support for patients, particularly those on GLP-1 medications and related programs. The role of these health coaches involves conducting 30-minute one-on-one virtual coaching sessions to help patients develop sustainable lifestyle habits. They utilize motivational interviewing and evidence-based behavior change techniques to assist patients in setting SMART goals, maintaining consistency, and navigating challenges. Coaches will address issues such as managing cravings, portion awareness, building exercise routines, stress eating, and the emotional aspects of weight management. They will also offer general education on healthy eating principles and meal planning, while strictly avoiding Medical Nutrition Therapy or individualized therapeutic nutrition. All sessions are documented in an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) using SOAP format, with relevant updates communicated to the care team.
Why It's Important?
This expansion by Mochi Medical signifies a growing trend in healthcare towards integrated, holistic patient support, particularly in chronic disease management like obesity and diabetes. By incorporating health coaches, Mochi Medical aims to enhance patient adherence to treatment plans and foster long-term lifestyle changes, which are crucial for the efficacy of medications like GLP-1s. This approach can lead to improved patient outcomes, reduced healthcare costs associated with complications from chronic conditions, and a more patient-centric care model. The emphasis on virtual care also increases accessibility for patients across the U.S., breaking down geographical barriers to specialized support. For the healthcare industry, this model highlights the increasing value of behavior change specialists in complementing traditional medical interventions, potentially setting a precedent for other practices looking to improve patient engagement and sustained health improvements.
What's Next?
Mochi Medical is actively recruiting certified health coaches (NBC-HWC, ACE-CHC, CHES) with at least one year of experience in health coaching or related fields. The company is seeking individuals passionate about metabolic health and leveraging digital healthcare to make a measurable difference. As these new health coaches are integrated, Mochi Medical will likely continue to refine its virtual care model, potentially expanding its patient caseload and program offerings. The success of this integrated approach could influence other medical practices to adopt similar models, further embedding health coaching into mainstream healthcare. Future developments may include enhanced digital tools for patient tracking and engagement, and potentially broader insurance coverage for health coaching services as their efficacy in improving patient outcomes becomes more widely recognized.
Beyond the Headlines
The integration of health coaches into medical teams, particularly in a virtual setting, raises important considerations regarding the scope of practice and the ethical boundaries between coaching and medical advice. Mochi Medical explicitly states that coaches will not cross into Medical Nutrition Therapy, underscoring the need for clear distinctions in roles within a multidisciplinary team. This model also highlights the evolving landscape of healthcare delivery, where technology enables more personalized and continuous support outside traditional clinical settings. The focus on sustainable lifestyle changes addresses the root causes of many chronic conditions, moving beyond symptomatic treatment to preventive and holistic care. This shift could empower patients with greater autonomy over their health, fostering a more proactive and engaged approach to wellness, and potentially reducing the long-term burden on the healthcare system.
