What's Happening?
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has recruited nearly 5,000 volunteers to test its digital income tax service, which will soon be mandatory for self-employed individuals, landlords, and microbusinesses. The Making Tax Digital (MTD) program is set to expand
in April 2026, requiring those with annual earnings of £50,000 or more to file tax returns digitally. The testing process aims to ensure the system operates smoothly and provides adequate guidance and training for users. The initiative follows the successful rollout of MTD for VAT returns, which began in 2019.
