What's Happening?
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) is participating in Operation Southern Slowdown, a multi-state initiative aimed at reducing excessive speeding and aggressive driving on highways. This annual campaign intensifies during the '100
Deadly Days of Summer,' a period known for increased traffic accidents. Partnering with law enforcement agencies from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee, the operation seeks to decrease the number of speed-related collisions and fatalities. Last year, South Carolina recorded 34,150 speed-related collisions, resulting in 337 deaths. The campaign, which began in 2017, will see increased patrols and traffic enforcement efforts through July 19.
Why It's Important?
Operation Southern Slowdown is crucial for enhancing road safety and reducing fatalities associated with speeding. By increasing patrols and enforcement, the initiative aims to deter dangerous driving behaviors, potentially saving lives and reducing the burden on emergency services. The campaign highlights the importance of collaborative efforts among states to address common safety challenges. With South Carolina experiencing a significant number of speed-related accidents, this operation could lead to a decrease in traffic-related injuries and fatalities, benefiting public safety and health systems.
