A recent study conducted by the Healthy Aging & Alzheimer’s Research Care (HAARC) Center at the University of Chicago and the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) has revealed that individuals known as 'SuperAgers' do not possess a genetic
advantage in resisting Alzheimer's disease. The study, published in Alzheimer's Research & Therapy, examined 231 adults aged 80 or older, including 142 SuperAgers and 89 healthy controls. Despite having memory abilities comparable to those in their 50s and 60s, the SuperAgers did not show significant differences in Alzheimer's-related genetic risk factors compared to their peers. The research focused on the APOE gene and three polygenic risk scores, finding no meaningful genetic distinctions between the groups. This suggests that exceptional memory in old age may depend on factors beyond genetic risk for Alzheimer's.
