What's Happening?
In early 2024, Almira Osmanovic Thunström, a Swedish medical researcher, conducted an experiment by creating a fictitious disease called 'bixonimania'. This supposed condition, which humorously claimed to turn eyelids pink from excessive screen time,
was detailed in two fake preprint papers uploaded to SciProfiles. Despite the papers being filled with obvious jokes, several AI models, including Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini, treated the disease as legitimate. The situation escalated when a team of Indian doctors cited the fake disease in a peer-reviewed journal, Cureus, before the article was retracted in March 2026.
