Covington city commissioners have approved a 10-year contract with Axon Enterprise, a technology company providing hardware and software for law enforcement. This new agreement extends Covington's previous five-year contract with Axon. The contract includes
120 body cameras, 120 tasers, an Axon Air Skydio drone for first responders, and a subscription to Axon AI Era, which offers transcription tools, evidence review, and translation services. Additionally, it provides four Axon Fleet 3 AI-driven recording systems for police cars and registration for the Axon Accelerate Conference for the next decade. Notably, the commissioners approved the contract without automated license plate readers, which Mayor Ron Washington had previously sought to restrict further. The police department is now required to report monthly to the city manager on how it uses the technology. City Manager Sharmili Reddy stated that Axon Evidence, used by Covington since 2016, has had no breaches, and access to data by other agencies requires individual, case-by-case authorization.
