What's Happening?
The Springfield-Greene County Library District in Missouri has been selected to host the 'Americans and the Holocaust' traveling exhibition, organized by the United States Holocaust Museum and the American Library Association. This exhibition will be displayed
from June 15 to July 27, 2026, in the Library Center Reading Room. It aims to explore how Americans responded to Nazism, war, and genocide in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s. The exhibition draws on primary source materials from that era to challenge the assumption that Americans were largely unaware of or inactive during the Holocaust. It also examines the influence of the Great Depression, isolationism, xenophobia, racism, and antisemitism on American responses. This exhibition is part of a broader tour that will visit 50 libraries across the U.S. from 2024 to 2026.
Why It's Important?
This exhibition is significant as it provides an opportunity for the public to engage with historical events that shaped global and national policies. By examining the American response to the Holocaust, the exhibition encourages reflection on current societal issues such as racism and xenophobia. It also serves as an educational tool to foster understanding and prevent future atrocities. The exhibition's presence in Springfield highlights the importance of local libraries as centers for community education and dialogue. It also underscores the role of historical awareness in shaping informed citizens who can critically engage with contemporary issues.
What's Next?
Following its display in Springfield, the exhibition will continue its tour across the United States, reaching various communities and potentially influencing public discourse on historical and current social issues. The Springfield-Greene County Library District will host related public programs to further engage the community. These programs may include lectures, discussions, and educational activities designed to deepen understanding of the Holocaust and its implications. The exhibition's impact will likely be assessed through community feedback and participation levels, guiding future educational initiatives by the library and its partners.
