What's Happening?
Colorado Mountain College (CMC) is experiencing a period of growth and transformation following a successful fall term and strong voter support for its recent ballot measure, 7C. The college is focusing
on expanding its workforce capacity to meet the increasing demand for skilled trades education in Colorado's mountain communities. CMC's Mountain Futures Strategic Plan guides this expansion, emphasizing innovation and integrity. The college is enhancing its skilled trades programs, which include fields like welding, automotive technology, and ski area operations, to accommodate more students. Additionally, CMC is creating a Department of Work-Based Learning to provide on-the-job training opportunities and strengthen connections between students and employers. The college is also exploring new facilities and housing solutions to support its growing academic programs and student needs.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of CMC's workforce capacity is crucial for addressing the educational and economic needs of Colorado's mountain communities. By increasing access to skilled trades education, CMC is helping to fill critical workforce gaps in industries vital to the region's economy. The college's focus on work-based learning and partnerships with local governments and employers aims to provide students with practical experience and reduce the financial burden of education. This approach not only benefits students but also supports local businesses by supplying a skilled workforce. Furthermore, CMC's efforts to develop additional housing units address a significant barrier to education and employment in the area, making it easier for students to live and study in these communities.
What's Next?
CMC plans to continue expanding its academic programs and facilities to meet the growing demand for skilled trades education. The college is in the early stages of proposing new construction and repurposing existing spaces to support its initiatives. Additionally, CMC aims to facilitate the development of 350 additional beds or 200-300 housing units over the next decade through partnerships with local entities. These efforts will require collaboration with counties, municipalities, school districts, hospitals, and other employers to create shared housing solutions. As CMC moves forward, it remains committed to being the first-choice college for Colorado's mountain communities, adapting to evolving technologies and student expectations.
