What's Happening?
For the first time, scientists have directly observed the formation of new ocean floor in the southern Indian Ocean. A French-led team captured a large seafloor spreading event, where tectonic plates pull apart and magma rises to fill the gap, creating
new crust. The event was recorded by an underwater observatory installed by Jean-Yves Royer and his team at the French National Centre for Scientific Research. The observatory's instruments provided detailed measurements of the seafloor's movement, revealing that much of the spreading occurred aseismically, without significant earthquakes.
