A new study conducted by Mass General Brigham has found a significant association between the daily consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and an increased risk of developing stomach cancer. The research, published in the journal Gastro Hep Advances,
indicates that individuals who drink at least one sugar-sweetened beverage per day more than double their risk of stomach cancer compared to those who rarely consume such drinks. This extensive study analyzed data from over 100,000 participants in the Nurses’ Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study, meticulously tracking diet, lifestyle, and health over several decades. The study identified 278 participants who developed stomach cancer during the follow-up period. Sugar-sweetened beverages, as defined in the study, include carbonated drinks, punch, lemonade, and sports drinks. Importantly, the study did not find a similar link with artificially sweetened beverages. This research marks the first time such an association has been demonstrated in a U.S. population, according to Dr. Andrew T. Chan, a senior author and gastroenterologist/epidemiologist with the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute.

This study carries significant implications for public health in the U.S., given that nearly two-thirds (63%) of American adults report consuming one or more sugar-sweetened beverages daily. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) already identifies sugar-sweetened beverages as the primary source of added sugars in the American diet, linking them to various health issues such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cavities. This new research adds stomach cancer to the growing list of potential health risks associated with these drinks, underscoring the urgency for public awareness and dietary changes.

Further research is needed to fully understand the biological mechanisms through which sugar-sweetened beverages contribute to stomach cancer development. The study's authors acknowledge limitations, including its observational design and the lack of comprehensive data on factors like H. pylori infection status or family history of cancer for all participants. Future studies could focus on more diverse populations to assess racial or ethnic differences in risk. Public health organizations, including the CDC, are likely to continue and potentially intensify their recommendations for reducing sugar-sweetened beverage intake. Individuals are encouraged to 'rethink their drink' and opt for healthier alternatives like water or unsweetened beverages. The findings may also prompt food and beverage manufacturers to consider reformulating products or increasing the availability of low-sugar options, although the study did not find a link between artificially sweetened beverages and stomach cancer.
