NASA is advancing its lunar exploration capabilities with the development of ECLIPSE, a novel thermal management system designed for small, mobile lunar devices. The Efficient variable Conductivity Lunar Insulator for Passive Surveyor Environmental control
(ECLIPSE) utilizes a Variable Thermal Conductivity Metamaterial (VTCM) to regulate temperature without external power sources. This system is crucial for enabling autonomous surveyors to operate in the extreme temperature conditions of the lunar environment. The metamaterial's design allows it to adjust its thermal conductivity based on temperature changes, ensuring devices remain operational while minimizing size, weight, power, and cost.
