What's Happening?
NASA has issued a Draft Request for Proposal (DRFP) to gather industry feedback on a new contract aimed at supporting the transportation of flown space vehicles and aerospace artifacts. This initiative, known as the Flown Space Vehicle Multimodal Transportation
Multiple Award Contract (MAC) Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ), seeks to establish a comprehensive transportation capability for NASA. The contract will cover the engineering, planning, and execution of transportation operations for large aerospace vehicles, spacecraft capsules, and other specialized government cargo. NASA is inviting industry participation to refine the final solicitation structure and ensure the contract effectively meets future transportation needs. The DRFP includes example task orders to illustrate potential transportation challenges, such as relocating a large aerospace vehicle similar to a Space Shuttle Orbiter or transporting a smaller spacecraft capsule like an Orion crew module.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it aims to enhance NASA's ability to manage complex transportation operations for its aerospace assets. By seeking industry input, NASA is ensuring that the contract will be well-suited to address the diverse and technical challenges associated with transporting large and historically significant aerospace vehicles. The contract is expected to support both current and future transportation requirements, thereby playing a crucial role in NASA's ongoing and upcoming missions. The involvement of industry experts will help NASA develop a robust and competitive acquisition strategy, potentially leading to more efficient and cost-effective transportation solutions. This could have broader implications for the aerospace industry, fostering innovation and collaboration between NASA and private sector companies.
What's Next?
NASA plans to conduct a Pre-Solicitation Conference in late April 2026 to further engage with industry stakeholders. The agency will continue to refine the solicitation based on feedback received during the draft phase. If the Request for Proposal (RFP) is issued, it will result in a Multiple Award IDIQ contract with the ability to issue Firm-Fixed Price task orders. The contract is anticipated to be awarded in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026. NASA will also monitor regulatory changes and incorporate necessary updates into the solicitation process. Industry participants are encouraged to submit their feedback by April 9, 2026, and to stay informed about updates through the SAM.gov website.
