The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) has released a report emphasizing the need for additional natural gas pipeline infrastructure and storage opportunities in the United States. The report, produced by NARUC's Gas-Electric
Alignment for Reliability task force, highlights the importance of improving coordination between the gas and electric sectors to bolster grid reliability. The task force was formed in 2023 to address the challenges posed by rising electricity demand, extreme weather, and reliance on gas-fired generation. The report includes nine recommendations, such as creating a natural gas readiness forum, developing new market tools to improve supplier performance during extreme weather, and incentivizing gas pipeline capacity releases. The report also discusses the impact of past events like Winter Storm Uri in 2021, which led to energy shortages and blackouts in Texas due to reduced fuel supplies.
