A recent study published in Alzheimer's Research & Therapy has challenged the notion that SuperAgers, individuals in their 80s and 90s with exceptional memory abilities, owe their cognitive resilience to genetic factors alone. Researchers from the Healthy
Aging & Alzheimer’s Research Care (HAARC) Center and the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) examined 142 SuperAgers and 89 cognitively average older adults. They focused on the APOE gene and polygenic risk scores, which are known to influence Alzheimer's disease risk. The study found no significant difference in these genetic markers between SuperAgers and their peers, suggesting that genetics alone do not account for their superior memory retention. This research indicates that other factors, such as biological, environmental, and experiential pathways, may play a crucial role in maintaining cognitive health.
