What's Happening?
In Cyprus, women accounted for 51.8% of the workforce in science and technology in 2025, according to Eurostat. This places Cyprus just below the EU average but still among the member states where women represent a majority in this sector. Despite this progress,
a significant gender gap persists in specialized professions such as science and engineering. Across the EU, women made up 52.5% of the science and technology workforce, but only 40.8% of scientists and engineers. The data highlights both the strides made in gender representation and the ongoing challenges in achieving equality in specialized fields.
Why It's Important?
The increase in women's participation in science and technology sectors is a positive development towards gender equality in the workforce. However, the persistent gender gap in specialized roles like scientists and engineers indicates that more efforts are needed to support women in these fields. Addressing these disparities is crucial for fostering innovation and ensuring diverse perspectives in scientific and technological advancements. The data from Cyprus and the EU serves as a benchmark for other regions aiming to improve gender representation in STEM fields.
