What's Happening?
Wiley, a global leader in authoritative content and research intelligence, has announced the launch of four new journals: Advanced City, Advanced Food, Advanced Microbiome, and Advanced Psychology. These additions expand its prestigious Advanced Portfolio
to a total of 36 journals. This brings the number of new titles launched by Wiley in 2026 to 10, surpassing its initial pledge in February to add eight new journals by year-end. The Advanced Portfolio is Wiley’s premier collection of multidisciplinary journals, covering life, health, physical, and social sciences, and is anchored by titles such as Advanced Science and Advanced Materials. Each new journal is open access and has begun accepting submissions, focusing on critical areas of scientific inquiry. For instance, Advanced City will publish research on urban systems, Advanced Food on interdisciplinary food science, Advanced Microbiome on microbiome research across various hosts and habitats, and Advanced Psychology on the full range of psychological science.
Why It's Important?
This expansion by Wiley signifies a strategic commitment to accelerating scientific research and providing accessible platforms for breakthrough work across diverse disciplines. By launching open-access journals in fields like urban systems, food science, microbiome research, and psychology, Wiley is directly addressing some of humanity's most pressing challenges. The move supports the broader scientific community by offering more venues for publication, which can lead to faster dissemination of knowledge and innovation. For researchers, these new journals provide specialized, yet accessible, platforms to share their findings, potentially increasing collaboration and the impact of their work. The focus on open access also ensures that critical research is available to a wider audience, fostering greater public engagement with scientific advancements and potentially influencing policy decisions in areas such as public health, urban planning, and environmental sustainability.
What's Next?
With the launch of these four new journals, Wiley will continue to solicit submissions, aiming to establish them as leading publications in their respective fields. The company's group vice president of publishing development, Allyn Molina, indicated a continued commitment to building premium options across every field of science. This suggests that further expansion of the Advanced Portfolio or similar initiatives could be anticipated in the future. The success of these new journals will depend on their ability to attract high-quality research and build a strong editorial reputation within the scientific community. Researchers and academic institutions will likely monitor the impact and reach of these new titles as they become established, potentially influencing where they choose to submit their work. The open-access model will also facilitate broader engagement, potentially leading to increased citations and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Beyond the Headlines
The rapid expansion of Wiley's Advanced Portfolio, particularly with open-access journals, reflects a significant trend in academic publishing towards greater accessibility and interdisciplinary research. This shift has profound implications for the democratization of knowledge, allowing research to reach a broader global audience beyond traditional academic circles. It also highlights the increasing recognition of complex, interconnected global challenges that require multidisciplinary approaches, such as sustainable urban development, food security, and holistic health. The emphasis on open access can also influence research funding models and institutional policies, as funders increasingly mandate open access for publicly funded research. Furthermore, by providing more diverse publication avenues, Wiley is contributing to the evolving landscape of scientific communication, potentially fostering new research paradigms and accelerating the translation of scientific discoveries into real-world applications and societal benefits.
