What's Happening?
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced that seven General Authority Seventies will be released from their assignments and granted emeritus status effective August 1, 2026. This announcement was made during the April 2026 general conference
by President D. Todd Christofferson, second counselor in the First Presidency. The seven leaders, who have collectively served nearly 95 years, include Elder Craig C. Christensen, Elder Eduardo Gavarret, Elder Brook P. Hales, Elder William K. Jackson, Elder Erich W. Kopischke, Elder Peter F. Meurs, and Elder S. Mark Palmer. The conference also saw the sustaining of eight new General Authority Seventies and a new Primary general presidency.
