Rio Tinto, in collaboration with State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) Qiyuan, has initiated a trial of battery swap electric haul truck technology at the Oyu Tolgoi copper mine in Mongolia. This marks
Rio Tinto's first implementation of battery swap technology in surface mining operations. The trial involves eight 91-tonne Tonly trucks equipped with 13 batteries, each with a capacity of 800 kilowatt-hours (kWh). A battery swapping station, static charger, and supporting infrastructure have been installed to facilitate the operation. The trucks are being used for tasks such as tailings dam construction and topsoil transportation, providing valuable operational experience with battery electric truck systems. The battery swapping technology allows for quick replacement of the truck's battery at a swap station in under seven minutes, eliminating the need for fixed facility charging.
