What's Happening?
Space42, a UAE-based satellite firm, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indonesia's Telkomsat to collaborate on direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity. This partnership will leverage
the Equatys D2D joint venture, aiming to develop a 3GPP-compliant non-terrestrial network using over 100 MHz of global mobile satellite services spectrum. The collaboration will focus on integrating terrestrial and satellite networks, regulatory compliance, and future growth strategies. Telkomsat has been reselling Starlink's satellite broadband service since 2024, and Starlink is also expanding its D2D service in various countries.
Why It's Important?
This partnership highlights the growing importance of satellite-based connectivity in ensuring reliable communications, especially in remote areas. By collaborating with Telkomsat, Space42 aims to expand its ecosystem and enhance universal connectivity. The initiative aligns with global trends towards integrating satellite and terrestrial networks to improve internet access. For Indonesia, this collaboration could enhance national network architecture and address strategic communication needs, potentially boosting economic development in remote regions.
