What's Happening?
Saudi Arabia's Visual Arts Commission, part of the Ministry of Culture, is organizing the country's pavilion at the 2026 Venice Biennale. Palestinian Saudi artist Dana Awartani has been selected to represent
Saudi Arabia. Awartani's work, which often reflects on the material and intangible memories of the Middle East, will be curated by Antonia Carver, director of Art Jameel, with assistance from Hafsa Alkhudairi. Awartani's practice draws on Saudi Arabia's craft and cultural legacies, collaborating with local artisans and displaced craftspeople. Her recent works have responded to the destruction of heritage sites, such as the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale and the Sharjah Biennial. The pavilion aims to highlight the intersection of ancient and contemporary cultural heritage.
Why It's Important?
The participation of Saudi Arabia in the Venice Biennale underscores the country's commitment to cultural diplomacy and international engagement through the arts. By showcasing Awartani's work, Saudi Arabia is promoting its cultural heritage and supporting regional artists on a global stage. This initiative aligns with the kingdom's broader cultural strategy to enhance its global cultural footprint and foster international collaborations. The pavilion also serves as a platform for dialogue on cultural preservation and the impact of conflict on heritage, contributing to a deeper understanding of the Middle East's cultural dynamics.
