What's Happening?
Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Adviser Professor Dr. Asif Nazrul emphasized Bangladesh's dedication to developing a skilled workforce to meet future global demands. Speaking at the Global
Labor Market Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Dr. Nazrul highlighted the country's efforts to transform its labor market qualitatively. Bangladesh has ratified all 10 core conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), showcasing its commitment to fairness, welfare, and accountability in the labor market. The Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Ordinance 2025 was introduced to facilitate trade union formation, eliminate gender-based wage discrimination, and prohibit worker blacklisting. Dr. Nazrul also noted the significance of a recent labor recruitment agreement between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia, which aims to promote safe migration. The conference was attended by labor ministers from 35 countries, including top ILO leaders.
Why It's Important?
The development of a skilled workforce is crucial for Bangladesh as it seeks to meet the growing global demand for skilled labor. By ratifying ILO conventions and amending labor laws, Bangladesh is positioning itself as a competitive player in the international labor market. These efforts not only aim to improve the working conditions and rights of Bangladeshi workers but also enhance the country's economic prospects by attracting foreign investment and fostering international partnerships. The labor recruitment agreement with Saudi Arabia is particularly significant, as it could lead to increased employment opportunities for Bangladeshi workers abroad, thereby boosting remittances and contributing to the country's economic growth.
