A review published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B by Catherine Hobaiter of the University of St Andrews and Nathaniel J. Dominy of Dartmouth College suggests that the flickering nature of campfire light, rather than its dimness, may have played
a crucial role in the evolutionary shift from gestural communication to speech. The researchers measured real campfires and found that the light is bright enough to resolve hand gestures. However, they argue that the constant pulsing and flickering of firelight, which causes the eye to repeatedly switch between photopic and mesopic vision, would have disadvantaged gestural communication by increasing receptor noise and lowering visual acuity. Conversely, the flicker rate of fire, around 2.7 hertz, aligns with the delta band of brain rhythms associated with enhanced attention and memory, and is close to the rhythm of human speech, potentially favoring vocal communication.
