What's Happening?
Archaeologists from Costa Rica and Mexico are restoring three pre-Columbian stone spheres at the Finca 6 Museum Site in Palmar de Osa, Costa Rica. These spheres, attributed to the Diquís culture, are part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Diquís Delta
archaeological sites. The restoration involves mechanical cleaning, removal of microorganisms, and chromatic reintegration using natural pigments. The project aims to preserve these unique limestone sculptures, which are vulnerable to environmental damage.
Why It's Important?
The restoration of the Diquís spheres is significant for preserving cultural heritage and understanding pre-Columbian civilizations. These spheres are emblematic of the Diquís culture's advanced sculptural techniques and hold historical importance. The collaboration between Costa Rica and Mexico highlights the value of international partnerships in heritage conservation. This project also raises awareness about the need to protect vulnerable archaeological sites from environmental threats.
