What's Happening?
GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc. has been appointed by Barnstable County to conduct a comprehensive PFAS investigation and remediation at a former fire training site in Hyannis, Massachusetts. The site, used for firefighter training from 1956 to 2019, has been contaminated
due to the use of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). GZA is undertaking a Phase II Site Assessment to evaluate the contamination and has installed a permeable reactive barrier to prevent further groundwater pollution. The project is part of a broader national effort to address PFAS contamination at legacy fire training sites.
Why It's Important?
The remediation efforts at the Hyannis site are crucial for protecting local water supplies and public health. PFAS, often referred to as 'forever chemicals,' are persistent in the environment and have been linked to various health issues. Addressing contamination at such sites is vital for preventing long-term environmental and health impacts. The project also highlights the importance of using advanced remediation technologies and public engagement to manage environmental risks effectively.
What's Next?
GZA will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the remediation strategies and engage with the local community to provide updates and address concerns. The success of this project could serve as a model for similar remediation efforts at other contaminated sites across the country.
