What's Happening?
Tees Valley Combined Authority has announced pipeline notices for remediation and consultancy services at the South Bank of its Teesworks development. Teesworks, one of Europe's largest brownfield developments, aims to transform 1,821 hectares of land
south of the River Tees. The project includes the former SSI UK/Tata Steel UK steelworks site in Redcar, part of the Teesside freeport. The development will accommodate manufacturing, logistics, and distribution facilities. The authority published notices for ground remediation and consultancy services, with tender notices expected by April 2026.
Why It's Important?
The Teesworks development represents a significant opportunity for economic growth and sustainable development in the Tees Valley region. By transforming industrial legacy sites into hubs for future investment, the project aims to attract businesses and foster innovation. The remediation efforts are crucial for preparing the land for new facilities, supporting job creation, and enhancing the region's economic prospects. The Teesworks scheme aligns with broader efforts to revitalize former industrial areas and promote regional development.
What's Next?
Construction progress at the South Bank site includes an £18M surface water drainage system. The Net Zero Teesside project, a major carbon capture initiative, is moving forward with Balfour Beatty as the main construction partner. The publication of tender notices for remediation services will be a key step in advancing the development. The project's success will depend on effective collaboration between public and private sectors and the ability to attract investment.
