Researchers have identified an active coral community off the coast of Benin, West Africa, in the Gulf of Guinea, which was previously presumed to be dead. This discovery was made using advanced sonar technology and deep-sea cameras, revealing a vibrant
ecosystem 177 feet below the surface. The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science, highlights the presence of a mesophotic coral reef system, which requires light to survive but exists in deeper waters. The research team, led by Gerard Zinzindohoue from the Benin Fisheries and Oceanological Research Institute, found a diverse coral garden with multiple species of octocorals and black corals, along with various reef-associated fish species. Notably, no coral bleaching was observed, indicating a healthy ecosystem.
