What's Happening?
Atrium Health, in partnership with Morehouse School of Medicine, is committing over $700 million in capital and clinical investment to establish a new teaching hospital and comprehensive care network in Atlanta. This initiative aims to address significant
healthcare access gaps in South and West Atlanta, particularly following the closure of Atlanta Medical Center and Atlanta Medical Center South in 2022. The project has received approval to proceed with plans for a new hospital at 675 Metropolitan Parkway SW, which will include a Level III trauma center, primary care practices, urgent care, specialty services, and virtual care options. The City of Atlanta is also expected to contribute over $115 million for site preparation, infrastructure improvements, and equipment. The new hospital is planned to open with approximately 50 beds, with the capacity to expand to over 700 beds as community needs evolve. The broader campus will also feature medical offices, research facilities, and additional developments to support healthcare and economic activity.
Why It's Important?
This significant investment by Atrium Health and Morehouse School of Medicine is crucial for improving healthcare access and outcomes in underserved communities across Central and South Fulton County, Georgia. The closure of previous medical centers left a substantial void, leading to residents traveling farther for essential health services. The new teaching hospital and integrated care network will provide much-needed emergency and acute hospital care, routine and preventive services, and specialized treatments closer to where people live. This initiative is expected to create substantial economic activity, with an estimated 5,400 construction jobs and 4,800 permanent direct, indirect, and induced positions at maturity, including approximately 1,000 new health system teammates and 150 care providers. The annual economic impact is projected to be around $1.25 billion once the campus and network are fully operational, benefiting the local economy and creating job opportunities in the healthcare sector.
What's Next?
The organizations will continue to engage with residents, community organizations, elected officials, and healthcare providers as planning for the new hospital and care network progresses. Updates will be provided as the project moves forward. The plans remain contingent on agreements with Fulton County regarding support for the ambulatory network, which aims to enhance access across South Fulton. Philanthropy and community support are identified as key drivers for the successful realization of this initiative. The new hospital is designed to grow with the community, with an initial capacity of approximately 50 beds and the ability to expand to over 700 beds over time. The partnership will also focus on developing a stronger pipeline of physicians and health professionals to serve Georgia communities for generations.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaboration between Atrium Health and Morehouse School of Medicine represents a deeper commitment to addressing health equity and social determinants of health in Atlanta. Morehouse School of Medicine, known for its focus on improving health in underserved communities, brings a critical perspective to this partnership. By designing the hospital and neighborhood care network as a seamless integrated system with common information systems and care protocols connected to transportation routes, the initiative aims to overcome systemic barriers to healthcare access. The project's emphasis on virtual care models, such as Hospital at Home, and the strategic placement of ambulatory sites based on federal service-area need methodology and the CDC’s Social Vulnerability Index, highlight an innovative approach to delivering care. This endeavor goes beyond merely building a hospital; it seeks to transform the healthcare landscape, foster economic development, and create a sustainable model for community well-being in a region that has historically faced significant healthcare disparities.
