What's Happening?
The U.S. Green Building Council’s Center for Green Schools has chosen 53 school system leaders from 25 states to participate in its 2026–2027 School Air Quality Fellowship. This nine-month program, running from September 2026 through May 2027, aims to provide
training, technical assistance, and peer support to help participants develop practical plans for improving indoor air quality and energy efficiency in schools. The fellows, who hold roles in facilities, environmental health and safety, business operations, and sustainability, were selected based on their district-wide responsibility for indoor air quality management, the potential impact of their planned projects, and balanced geographic representation across the U.S. The program will equip them with the School District Energy Efficient Indoor Air Quality Management Plan Toolkit, developed in partnership with the American Lung Association, Go Green Initiative, and the University of Utah, to create district-specific plans. This initiative comes as K-12 schools increasingly prioritize indoor air quality due to factors like wildfire smoke, respiratory illnesses, and new state requirements.

What's Next?
The 53 selected fellows will embark on the nine-month program from September 2026 to May 2027. During this period, they will utilize the provided toolkit to create district-specific indoor air quality plans tailored to their needs. Each fellow will also receive professional development, including personalized training and technical assistance from specialists, fully paid access to an eligible professional credential, and travel support to attend the 2027 Green Schools Conference and School Facilities Leadership Summit in Austin, Texas. The implementation of these plans in their respective districts, which collectively serve over 2 million students, is expected to follow the fellowship. The long-term goal is to establish sustainable practices that improve learning and working conditions for students and staff across diverse districts, including those with Title I-eligible schools and Tribal-serving districts.
