Base Power, a battery manufacturing startup founded by Zach Dell, has moved into the former building of the Austin American-Statesman newspaper in downtown Austin. The startup, which produces residential
batteries, plans to use the 55,000-square-foot facility as a temporary site while transitioning its operations back in-house. The building's owners, the Cox family, rented the property to Base Power after plans to convert the site into condos, offices, and retail space were stalled by environmental lawsuits. Base Power has already begun testing machinery and aims to achieve full production within weeks, employing 20 full-time workers with plans to hire up to 150 more.
