Saab has developed the Double Eagle SAROV, a 1,609-pound underwater drone designed to hunt and neutralize mines in the Baltic Sea. This drone operates in two modes: autonomously on internal batteries for reconnaissance and with a tether for mine disposal.
The SAROV is part of a family of mine-hunting vehicles, with Poland and the United Kingdom as its current customers. Poland's fourth new minehunter, equipped with the SAROV, has been on sea trials since March and is expected to be delivered in the fall. The UK recently signed a contract for Saab's mine-killing technology to meet urgent defense needs. The SAROV's design minimizes its magnetic signature to avoid triggering mines, and it can operate at depths of up to 984 feet.
