The U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) has granted X-Bow Systems a contract worth nearly $11 million to develop and flight-test a Low-Cost Interceptor. This initiative is part of the MDA’s Rapid Response Small Launcher Technology program and its broader
Low-Cost Interceptor initiative. The goal is to create interceptor technologies that can reduce the cost of countering ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missile threats to below $750,000 per round. Current missile defense weapons, such as the Patriot interceptor, can cost between $2 million and $4 million each. X-Bow Systems plans to achieve this cost reduction by integrating the development of the interceptor and its solid rocket motor in-house, thereby controlling production costs and output. Founder and CEO Jason Hundley emphasized that the existing U.S. supplier base cannot meet the growing demand for missile defense, highlighting the need for innovative approaches to production.
