What's Happening?
Marlene Graham, a grandmother from Southwest Florida, has launched OUR50, a nationwide educational initiative inspired by her family's three historic journeys to all 50 U.S. states. The project aims to educate children about America's diverse culture,
history, and natural wonders through monthly state-themed boxes, virtual experiences, and community partnerships. The initiative is rooted in Graham's family legacy, beginning with a 1976 Bicentennial journey and followed by two more family adventures in the 1990s. OUR50 seeks to foster a sense of national unity and appreciation for the country's unique attributes.
Why It's Important?
OUR50 represents a significant effort to engage younger generations in learning about the United States' rich cultural and historical tapestry. By providing interactive and educational experiences, the project encourages children to explore and appreciate the diversity of the nation. This initiative also promotes family bonding and community involvement, as it invites participation from families, educators, and local organizations. In a time when digital connectivity often overshadows personal interaction, OUR50 offers a tangible way to connect with the country's heritage and foster a sense of belonging and pride among participants.
What's Next?
As OUR50 prepares for its fall rollout, the project is building a list of Founding Families and seeking partnerships with tourism organizations, educators, and community leaders. The first educational box will focus on Florida, with plans to expand to other states. The initiative also includes the development of small Founders Parks across the country, starting with a pilot park in Florida. These parks aim to serve as physical spaces where families can gather and celebrate their participation in the project, further solidifying the community aspect of OUR50.
