What's Happening?
Scholastic and the Little Free Library literacy nonprofit have partnered with author Dav Pilkey to install 100 custom-designed book-sharing boxes in schools and public libraries across underserved communities in the U.S. This initiative coincides with the release
of Pilkey's latest book, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Manga, and aims to celebrate National School Library Month. The boxes, funded by Pilkey, feature his signature illustrations and are stocked with a curated collection of kid-friendly titles, including copies of the new manga. The initiative is part of LFL's 'Power Up with Reading' campaign, which previously installed Dog Man-themed boxes in each U.S. state. Locations for the new boxes include schools and libraries in various states such as Kentucky, Minnesota, New York, and California.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it addresses the issue of book accessibility in underserved communities, promoting literacy and encouraging a love for reading among children. By placing these book-sharing boxes in strategic locations, Scholastic and Little Free Library are directly contributing to educational equity. The collaboration with Dav Pilkey, a popular children's author, further enhances the appeal and effectiveness of the program. This effort not only supports literacy development but also fosters community engagement, as children and families are invited to explore and enjoy the books available in their neighborhoods.
What's Next?
The distribution of the Captain Underpants book-sharing boxes will continue through July, with ongoing efforts to expand the reach of the initiative. In addition to the installations, a nationwide book giveaway is being hosted, allowing fans in the U.S. and Canada to enter to win copies of The First Epic Manga. Priority will be given to schools and libraries that participate in the giveaway. This initiative may inspire similar programs in other regions, potentially leading to increased partnerships between authors, publishers, and literacy organizations.
