What's Happening?
South Korea has deployed its new Korean Tactical Surface-to-Surface Missile (KTSSM) system, as announced by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). The KTSSM, developed by Hanwha Aerospace, is designed for rapid long-range and guided precision
strikes on enemy artillery and military installations. This deployment is part of South Korea's three-axis defense strategy, which includes air defense, pre-emptive strike, and retaliation capabilities. The KTSSM is a key component of the country's kill-chain capabilities, aimed at neutralizing North Korean missile threats. An enhanced version, the KTSSM-II, is currently in development, expected to be completed by 2027.
Why It's Important?
The deployment of the KTSSM system is a critical step in strengthening South Korea's defense posture against potential threats from North Korea. By enhancing its missile capabilities, South Korea aims to deter aggression and maintain regional stability. This move is also significant in the context of the broader geopolitical landscape, where tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain high. The development and deployment of advanced military technology underscore South Korea's commitment to maintaining a robust defense infrastructure. Additionally, the KTSSM system's deployment may influence regional security dynamics, prompting responses from neighboring countries and impacting diplomatic relations.
