A new bilingual visual series titled 'Cumbia Across Latin America' has been launched, showcasing the cultural significance of cumbia music across six countries: Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, and the United States. Photographers and storytellers Karla Gachet and Ivan Kashinsky, supported by the National Geographic Explorer Program, have documented the journey of cumbia music, which originated on the Colombian coast during colonial times. The series highlights how cumbia has evolved from a working-class soundtrack to a genre that symbolizes Latin American identity, absorbing local styles and spreading globally, including to the bars of downtown Los Angeles.
