Beyond his career, Johnston was deeply involved in his community, serving in various leadership roles including as a board member of the Friends of the Lake Forest Library and Chairman of the Rolls Royce Owners’ Club. He was also the Treasurer of the Lake Forest Preservation Foundation and President of the LF/LB Running Club. Johnston shared 26 years of marriage with his wife, Cathryn 'Cappy' Johnston, and was an avid traveler and cyclist. He is survived by his wife, stepson, grandchildren, siblings, and extended family.
