New Smyrna Beach Utilities (NSBU) has commenced a significant expansion of its water treatment plant, introducing Florida's largest pellet softening system. This project aims to replace outdated lime softening reactor
clarifiers with a modern system that enhances reliability, capacity, and sustainability. The expansion will increase the plant's capacity to 8.7 million gallons per day (mgd), with future provisions to expand to 11.6 mgd. The new system is designed to use 45% fewer chemicals and 50% less energy, eliminating lime sludge disposal and reducing byproduct waste by 80%. The project, expected to be completed by late 2027, is part of NSBU's long-term strategy to provide a sustainable, high-quality water source while avoiding the costs of building alternative facilities like a reverse osmosis plant.
