What's Happening?
A retreat in Playa Venao, Panama, known as Retreat Lochamim, is providing a structured healing environment for Israeli combat soldiers dealing with PTSD and other emotional challenges. The retreat, organized by Rabbi Yariv Klein and his wife Lital, offers
a combination of discussion circles, bodywork, and community support. The program is designed to help soldiers transition from a state of guarded survival to one of regulated presence and belonging. The initiative is supported by the local Israeli community in Panama and receives funding from the Jewish community of Panama City and the Israeli Embassy in Panama.
Why It's Important?
The retreat addresses a critical need for mental health support among Israeli soldiers who have experienced combat. By providing a safe and structured environment, the program helps participants process trauma and rebuild trust in themselves and others. This model of community-supported healing could serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives in other locations, offering a complementary approach to traditional mental health systems. The success of the retreat highlights the importance of addressing mental health challenges in a holistic manner, incorporating both professional guidance and community involvement.
What's Next?
The retreat plans to expand its offerings to include programs for women combat soldiers and young IDF widows. There is also potential for the model to be replicated in other countries where Israeli soldiers travel, such as India and Thailand. The program's growth is driven by word of mouth, reflecting a significant demand for such healing spaces. Continued support from the global Jewish community and further research into the retreat's impact could enhance its effectiveness and reach.
