What's Happening?
Sarawak's Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has highlighted the critical need for a highly skilled workforce to support the state's transition towards a digital and green economy. Speaking at the Premier Gold Hand Award Ceremony
2025, he emphasized the role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in preparing Sarawak's workforce for industries reshaped by technology and sustainability. The Premier noted that the state's economic transformation under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 is guided by global sustainability mandates and the influence of artificial intelligence and cutting-edge technologies. The event, held in conjunction with the fourth edition of WorldSkills Malaysia Sarawak, serves as a strategic platform to nurture young talent aligned with the state's economic needs.
Why It's Important?
The emphasis on TVET and skilled workforce development is crucial for Sarawak as it aims to position itself as a leader in digital and green industries. By focusing on education and training, the state is ensuring that its workforce is not only employable but also capable of driving innovation and sustainable growth. This approach is expected to bridge the gap between education and industry, providing young people with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing economic landscape. The initiative also supports Sarawak's broader economic goals by fostering a talent pool that can meet global standards and compete on an international level.
What's Next?
Sarawak plans to implement the Sarawak Talent Development Policy and Blueprint, which aims to strengthen collaboration between the public and private sectors in developing a future-ready workforce. This policy will focus on expanding digital connectivity, reliable energy systems, and strong logistics to create an enabling environment for sustainable business innovation. The continued efforts by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development and the Sarawak Regional Skills Development Department will be crucial in training and developing young talent to drive the state's future growth.
