What's Happening?
Egypt and Chad are intensifying their bilateral cooperation efforts, as highlighted by a meeting between Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates, Badr Abdelatty, and Chad’s Foreign Minister Ahmat Kogri.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 22nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) in Tripoli. Abdelatty emphasized the importance of strengthening relations, expanding trade and investment ties, and increasing the participation of Egyptian companies in the Chadian market. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Nader Zaki noted that Abdelatty welcomed the growing momentum in Egyptian-Chadian relations, reaffirming Egypt’s commitment to directives from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby to deepen ties. Discussions also covered regional developments, stressing the need for closer coordination to address common challenges and support security and stability efforts, including strengthening CEN-SAD's role in counter-terrorism and capacity building.
Why It's Important?
This enhanced cooperation between Egypt and Chad holds significant implications for regional stability and economic development in Africa. By increasing trade and encouraging joint investments, both nations aim to foster economic growth, create opportunities, and improve livelihoods. The expansion of Egyptian private-sector activities in Chad can bring expertise and capital, contributing to Chad's development goals. Furthermore, closer coordination on regional developments and common challenges, particularly in counter-terrorism and capacity building through CEN-SAD, is crucial for addressing the persistent security threats in the Sahel and broader African continent. This partnership underscores a commitment to African-led solutions for regional issues, potentially leading to more effective and sustainable peace and security initiatives.
What's Next?
The immediate next steps involve implementing the directives from both presidents to deepen bilateral ties and broaden cooperation. This will likely include concrete measures to increase trade exchange, facilitate joint investments, and support Egyptian private-sector expansion in Chad, building on the outcomes of the fourth session of the Egyptian-Chadian Joint Commission. Both countries are expected to continue their close coordination and consultation on regional developments, particularly within the framework of CEN-SAD, to address common challenges and bolster security and stability efforts. Further discussions will focus on activating CEN-SAD's specialized institutions and mechanisms to expand cooperation among member states in critical areas like counter-terrorism and development.
Beyond the Headlines
