The Guardia Civil in Bizkaia has concluded 'Operation Baloni,' an investigation into a scam involving the sale of fake football tickets online. Eight individuals residing in Bizkaia and Cantabria are under investigation for their alleged involvement in continuous
fraud, money laundering, and belonging to a criminal group. The investigation began after a complaint from a person who purchased a football ticket online but never received it after payment. Authorities have identified 16 victims across various Spanish regions, including Toledo, Valladolid, Huesca, Badajoz, Gipuzkoa, Almería, Bizkaia, and the Community of Madrid. The total amount defrauded is estimated to be at least 8,200 euros. The perpetrators' method involved posting fake ticket advertisements on online marketplaces, contacting interested buyers, and receiving payments, primarily through instant peer-to-peer payment systems linked to phone numbers. Once payment was received, the tickets were never delivered. To complicate tracking, the suspects allegedly used different phone numbers, identities, and bank accounts, with third parties reportedly providing their details or payment methods in exchange for financial compensation.
