What's Happening?
Forsyth Technical Community College has been recognized as one of the top 25 community colleges in the United States by an international think tank, the Aspen Institute. This recognition is part of the Aspen Institute's evaluation for its top prize, which
seeks to identify community colleges that deliver positive outcomes for their students. Forsyth Tech has achieved significant milestones, including doubling its graduation rate over the past five years and tripling it for minority students. The college has also seen its enrollment grow to the highest level in over a decade, providing pathways to stable employment for its students. President Janet Spriggs attributes these successes to the dedicated faculty and the college's efforts to address barriers faced by adult learners, such as daycare, transportation, and food insecurity. Forsyth Tech is now one of 25 semifinalists competing for a $1 million prize, with 10 finalists to be announced by mid-June. A panel of judges will visit each finalist campus, and the winner will be announced in April of the following year.
Why It's Important?
The recognition of Forsyth Tech as a top community college highlights the critical role such institutions play in providing accessible education and improving student outcomes. Community colleges are often a gateway to higher education and stable employment, especially for non-traditional students who may face various challenges. Forsyth Tech's success in increasing graduation rates and enrollment, particularly among minority students, underscores the importance of targeted support services in overcoming barriers to education. This recognition not only brings prestige to Forsyth Tech but also serves as a model for other community colleges striving to enhance their educational offerings and support systems. The potential $1 million prize could further bolster Forsyth Tech's programs and initiatives, benefiting current and future students.
What's Next?
As Forsyth Tech awaits the announcement of the 10 finalists in mid-June, the college will continue to focus on its mission of providing quality education and support to its diverse student body. If selected as a finalist, Forsyth Tech will prepare for an in-person visit from the panel of judges, showcasing its programs and initiatives. The outcome of this competition could influence future funding and policy decisions at the college, potentially leading to expanded services and resources for students. The broader community and stakeholders will be watching closely, as the recognition and potential prize could have significant implications for the college's growth and development.
