A recent study published in Alzheimer's & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association has found that frequent television watching in midlife may lead to brain changes associated with memory problems, cognitive decline, and dementia later in life.
The research analyzed data from approximately 1,700 adults in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study, a long-term U.S. project on cardiovascular and brain health. Participants, who were around 53 years old on average when they joined the study between 1987 and 1989, reported their television watching habits. More than 20 years later, brain MRI scans revealed that those who watched TV very often had smaller brain volumes in regions associated with memory and larger volumes of white matter hyperintensities, which are linked to aging and cognitive decline. The study highlights that not all sedentary activities have the same impact on brain health, as occupational sitting showed different patterns.
