Researchers led by Kate Detwiler from Florida Atlantic University have discovered a new species of monkey in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The species, named Colobus congoensis, was identified after extensive fieldwork and analysis, including DNA
and bone studies. The monkey, known locally as Likweli, is distinct from other colobus species due to its unique physical characteristics and behavior. The discovery process, which began with a blurry photo in 2008, culminated in a published study recommending the species be classified as endangered.
