Researchers from Loughborough University have developed tailored advice for drivers suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) to manage tiredness behind the wheel. The study, led by Professor Ashleigh Filtness of the Transport Safety Research Center,
found that common 'caffeine nap' guidance, which involves a caffeinated drink followed by a 15-minute nap, may not be optimally effective for individuals with OSA. The research involved 21 OSA drivers undergoing CPAP treatment, whose sleep was restricted to four hours. Participants completed driving simulator sessions to assess the effects of varying caffeine amounts and nap durations on alertness and driving performance. The findings, published in Scientific Reports, indicated that two coffees significantly improved alertness and reduced driving errors compared to one. While a 15-minute nap added modest benefits, the primary recommendation for OSA drivers is two coffees, with a nap if practical. The study also highlighted that four hours of sleep, even with CPAP compliance, was insufficient for safe driving.
