A recent analysis co-authored by an Oklahoma economist has revealed that even a single extra day of high temperatures can significantly increase public healthcare costs. The study found that Medicaid spending
rises by a quarter of a percent for each additional day that temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit. When temperatures surpass 100 degrees, the increase in Medicaid spending can reach nearly 2%. This analysis utilized over a million federal Medicaid records from 2019 to 2024, alongside temperature data, to quantify the fiscal impact of rising temperatures. The study projects that continued global warming could lead to an additional $2.1 billion to $2.7 billion in annual national Medicaid spending by 2050, with a cumulative cost increase of $28 billion to $36 billion from 2024 to 2050.
