What's Happening?
Dutch grid operator TenneT is set to commence horizontal directional drilling at Maasvlakte to facilitate the connection of three offshore wind farms to the onshore grid. The project involves the installation of steel casing pipes at three beach work
sites, enabling drilling beneath the beach and seabed. This process will occur in three stages: a pilot bore from the beach towards the sea, widening of the borehole, and installation of conduit pipes for electricity cables. These cables will connect the IJmuiden Ver Beta, IJmuiden Ver Gamma, and Nederwiek 2 wind farms, which are expected to supply 6 GW of power. The drilling approach is necessary due to shallow coastal waters that prevent large cable-laying vessels from operating close to shore. TenneT aims to minimize environmental impact on the beach, nature, and recreation areas. The first electricity from the project is anticipated to reach the Dutch high-voltage grid by 2029.
